Air conditioning check

How to Check if Your Car Air Conditioning is Faulty

If you’re planning a long car journey in Shrewsbury or just want to get your car in the best condition ready for the warmer months, your air conditioning needs to be checked. It’s a sinking feeling when your air conditioning fails when you need it most, and if you have kids or pets in your car, it’s important to keep your car comfortable. If you think your air-con isn’t working as it should, here’s how to check for some common problems.

Bad smells coming from your air-con unit

If you have a lingering bad smell in your car, it’s probably because your air conditioning is about to break down. There are some common smells that will come from your car that signal you should bring it in to get the air-con checked:

  • Damp: This can mean there’s a build-up of mould in your air conditioning unit that will eventually cause it to stop working.
  • Musty: This can mean your air-con is clogged with dirt, grime, and dust and is in need of a service.
  • Chemicals or exhaust fumes: If your brakes aren’t working efficiently, you might start getting a chemical smell through your air vents. Bring your car in immediately for a free performance check if this happens.
  • Gas: If you smell gas, there could be a leak in the coolant which will need to be fixed.

Regularly cleaning your air conditioner (AC) with cleaning fluid can help prevent some of these smells from occurring. But the best thing to do is to book a regular air conditioning service to keep it running as it should.

Low refrigerant

The refrigerant gas is crucial to ensure your air conditioning runs efficiently. This gas is what makes the air nice and cold when it circulates in your car. If you have a leak in your refrigerant, your air won’t get as cold as it should and it will eventually lead to a fault and stop working.

If your air-con isn’t getting cold, it’s probably a leak or crack letting refrigerant out. Luckily, this is a fairly easy fix that we can take care of here at Four Crosses Garage in Shrewsbury.

Air-con won’t turn off

If your cold air won’t turn off, it can become a real issue on colder days. Not to mention it will cause your car battery to drain much more quickly.

If your car’s air conditioning won’t turn off, there might be an issue with the control circuit, a loose ribbon cable, or simply a broken dial. All of these problems can be addressed at our garage and we can get your air conditioning working as it should.
